People who don't care about copyright law itself, will care about how it affects other issues they do care about. Broadening this, I think, enriches the debate. You may make the case that it distracts and can potentially confuse people regarding what the central point is. I would make the case that it provides a logical way to engage a wider diversity of people in the precise points of the copyright debate.
