Reading about the methodology of such statistics is always interesting,
but most often people do not.
Look at the power that the BSA and CAAST have with their so-called
"piracy statistics" in convincing governments to solve their "problem"
(which I believe is far less credible than the CRIA "problem"). Their
methodologies have holes you can fly jumbo-jets through, with 1-part
objective statistic mixed in with 9-parts wishful thinking. Their
methodology includes all the machines I have that are FLOSS based (no
BSA/CAAST member software) as "piracy".
