Dear Globe & Mail, and David Arkin,
Thank you for letting more people find out about Creative Commons and
the copyright reforms spear-headed by Lawrence Lessig. If the Canadian
Music Industry were to chose to read his book "Free Culture" to instruct
themselves on the history and meaning of "copyright" they could spend a
lot more time out of Canadian Courts and a lot more time out on the
street, in their market, promoting their works in a cheaper and better
way using CC licenses.
Fading Ways Records embraced Creative Commons licenses back in February
of this year, for all our 2004 releases, and our sales figures (which
were NEVER hurt by downloading anyways) are already looking up. We are
the first internationally distributed label to do this for our physical
product going into stores around the world - we wish others would join
us in this new way of promoting our artists, which, as a
"try-before-you-buy" method, is much fairer to music fans, rather than
trying to make people pay for downloads of albums that only have one or
two good songs in them. Word to major-label record execs around the
world: Creative Commons is NOT your enemy. Call off your CRIA/RIAA
wardogs and stop suing your customers.
Sincerely,
Neil Leyton
Fading Ways Records Ltd.
