  "What if?" games are generally based too much on opinions, and too
little on hard facts.

  Looking back at the world before patents, there wasn't much barrier
to innovation, but there was a big problem with new ideas being stolen
(credit and all) by people other than the inventors.

  But that kind of behaviour wasn't limited to inventions, and patents
don't protect it.  See "The map that changed the world".
