I think one of the key problems is that nobody does separate the two.
If you go to someone and say "I feel that authors should be recognized
for what they wrote for the rest of their lives plus 50 years", I suspect
that most people would agree with you. The problem is that the way that
ends up being legislated is that they get a monopoly right for that
duration. We need to break that tie. If we can do so, then it becomes
much harder to justify term extensions for monopoly privileges.
